Far North Queensland Golf Guide

Tee Time Between the Rainforest and the Reef

As the weather begins to cool down in the southern hemisphere, it’s fair to say that a golf trip to Far North Queensland is very enticing. The spectacular reef to rainforest settings that the following golf courses are situated in is nothing short of breathtaking.

One thing that stands out when visiting the region is how friendly everybody is. Pro shop staff were welcoming everywhere we went and the locals we met were happy to share their travel tips (and golf course hints) with us too.

We recommend booking a rental car (the Cairns Airport is the easiest collection point) and creating a self-drive golf guide itinerary for Far North Queensland. Take the time to play all the courses and be sure to explore the myriad of land-based and marine-orientated activities on showcase in the tropics.

The Mirage Country Club

Home to an iconic Australian golf course that attracts keen golfers from all over the globe. The unique resort-style layout weaves players through the majestic grounds of the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort for much of the front nine (the beach course). Be sure to keep your camera ready as two of these fairways are placed alongside Four Mile Beach and offer delightful views of the Coral Sea. It’s such a treat to play the well-kept greens here! Over on the back nine, you’ll find a golfing oasis buffered by a mountainous tropical backdrop. The water hazards, bunkering, and mangrove-lined estuaries are bound to keep you on your toes over the clubhouse side of the road.

Sure, it’s a bit more of a challenging layout compared to the front nine but it’s a whole lot of fun, nonetheless. This18-hole international standard championship golf course is 6200m in length and is made up of 6 x par threes, 6 x par fours, and 6 x par fives and was designed by renowned golf architects Peter Thomson(5x times British Open winner) and Michael Wolveridge.

Mossman Golf Club

In the beautiful Douglas Shire of Far North Queensland, Mossman Golf Club sits within a rainforest environment between the imposing mountains of the Great Dividing Range and the shimmering Coral Sea.

It’s immediately evident that dedicated staff maintains the fairways and greens to a high standard. The course offers many challenges with a few long par 4 holes and opportunities for scoring every golfer’s dream of a hole-in-one on the par 3 holes.

The club is open 7 days a week and operates a pro-shop where bookings can be made for games, club hire, and motorised cart hire. Mossman Golf Club fees are set at reasonable rates to enable the game of golf to be affordable to visitors and locals alike.

Mossman Golf Club claims to be the friendliest club in Far North Queensland and after just one round here, we wholeheartedly believe them. It’s a very welcoming place for beginners through to professionals. Bonus points for their proud support of junior players in the area and for the varied programs that the club offers to those interested in learning and advancing their skills.

X Golf Cairns

Golf entertainment venues are globally becoming big business and for good reason. X Golf Carins is no exception with its buzzing atmosphere, state-of-the-art golf simulators, delicious food and drinks and golf lesson offerings. Indoor golf isn’t weather-dependent and is always exciting. Do it.

Half Moon Bay Golf Club

Half Moon Bay Golf Club is a picturesque course with a variety of majestic views, from the dramatic Redlynch Valley to the south, the lush Kuranda Range to the west, and the sparkling waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the east.

Whether you’re a scratch player, a total beginner, or just visiting Far North Queensland on holiday, Half Moon Bay Golf Club offers a challenging golfing experience and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Players find the variety of holes here interesting and challenging. There’s a mix of long, clear fairways where you can really open up, plus some tighter layouts that demand respect and punish over-confidence.

HMBGC can be quite busy virtually all year round, it’s best to plan ahead and book a tee time.

Cairns Golf Club

Welcome to one of the best Championship Golf Courses in Far North Queensland. The Cairns Golf Club Par 72 layout is famed for its beautifully maintained greens, tropical palm tree fringed fairways, picturesque yet challenging water hazards, and its friendly atmosphere. Social play is available 7 days a week and there’s a flood-lit driving range for members and visitors too. Be sure to have a post-round beverage at the Clubhouse!

Atherton Golf Club

Atherton is a parkland course that has a variety of large and small elevated greens, with fairways that thread through tall gum trees. Located at about 700m above sea level, you’ll find that your shots fly that little bit extra in distance; most visitors find they are hitting one club less with their approach shots. The altitude also makes the course much cooler to play at any time of the year, rather than the courses on the tropical coast at sea level.

The course is easily walked, though motorised buggies are available for hire, and while it is not long it comprises many holes where good course management and well-played irons are rewarded. A few longer holes reward the big hitters, but all golfers will find Atherton a good test of golf. Bring your tree iron!

Palmer Sea Reef Golf Club

Come and enjoy “Golf in Paradise” at the finest tropical links golf course in Australia. The Palmer Sea Reef is ranked in Australia’s top 100 courses and is maintained to Championship standard year-round. Designed by Thomson, Wolveridge & Perrett the course is Australia’s only tropical links style golf course.

Measuring 6135 metres, Palmer Sea Reef offers 3 different teeing grounds to allow golfers of all abilities, from novice to seasoned professionals to enjoy or test their game. The course boasts wide undulating fairways, 89 bunkers, and large greens with well-placed swales and mounds to make Palmer Sea Reef an outstanding golf experience.

The clubhouse is the perfect place to sit and relax and enjoy a cold drink after your round. Keep in mind that the team at Palmer Sea Reef also caters for events and private functions – we think it’s the perfect place to host a tropical-themed wedding. Cheers!

LUXURY GOLF STAY & PLAY IN PORT DOUGLAS

Pullman Sea Temple Resort & Spa

Located right next to the Palmer Sea Reef tropical links course in Port Douglas, this resort makes the perfect base for a ‘stay and play’ North Queensland golf holiday.

The rooms here are nothing short of phenomenal and we highly recommend booking a luxe penthouse suite with a few keen golfer friends. The private rooftop is perfect for a sunset BBQ and the secluded spa zone upstairs works miracles to melt any muscle tension away after a big day on the course. Having a self-contained apartment on holiday in Port Douglas makes sense. Preparing meals and/or sharing canapes with your contemporaries on a swish balcony is super easy.

Rather enjoy a gourmet dinner alongside a torch-lit lagoon? Great, because the onsite Aluco restaurant is open every night too. Cruise into sundowner mode with a glass of bubbles or a chilled cocktail at Aluco - one of Port Douglas’ most spectacular eateries. Be sure to book ahead to reserve a table for dinner here.

The same goes for spa bookings, book in as soon as you can! Vie Spa at the Pullman Port Douglas is popular for good reason. It’s a heavenly sanctuary of lush body treatments at the fingertips of expert therapists.
